The Iris-scanning project Worldcoin has made significant strides, with its mobile World App surpassing 4 million downloads, according to a recent blog post by the project’s development team, “Tools for Humanity.” If this download figure is verified by Coingecko, it could rank the World App as the sixth most downloaded software wallet on Coingecko’s list.
The Tools for Humanity team also revealed a notable increase in monthly users, boasting over 1 million, which is double the user base they had six months ago.
Worldcoin operates by allowing users to prove their identity through iris scanning, providing them with a “World ID” to validate their humanity to various applications and distinguish them from bots. As a reward for undergoing this verification, users receive 25 Worldcoin (WLD) tokens, currently valued at approximately $46.50.
Nevertheless, Worldcoin has faced criticism for concerns related to privacy. Critics argue that the project is overly centralized, potentially leading to data leaks for users.
To convert their WLD into usable assets, Worldcoin users are required to download the World App to create an account. The development team’s November 1 post disclosed that the app has been downloaded over 4 million times, positioning it above the Solana Phantom wallet but below Bitcoin.com’s Bitcoin wallet in terms of popularity, as per Coingecko’s wallet rankings.
Furthermore, it’s not just about downloads; many users are actively engaging with the app after installation. The app currently boasts 1 million monthly users, with 500,000 weekly users and 100,000 daily active users. This reflects a doubling of the monthly user base in the last six months, according to the post.
Despite its achievements, the Worldcoin project remains under scrutiny from privacy advocates. On October 2, a Kenyan parliamentary committee ordered Worldcoin to cease operations in the country due to privacy concerns. The project complied with the order and affirmed its commitment to adhering to all relevant privacy laws in Kenya.
