Senator of the United States Michael Bennet urged the labeling of AI-generated content in a letter to OpenAI and Google, among other significant tech firms.
Senator Michael Bennet of the United States has urged digital giants including OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta, Twitter, and Alphabet to label artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content and keep an eye out for it.
In a letter dated June 29, Bennet emphasised the value of user knowledge when AI is used to produce content. He also noted the negative effects of phony photos, especially when they have political connotations.
Bennet emphasized the necessity for clarity in separating human- and AI-generated content and highlighted concerns about the potential detrimental effects of deceptive AI-generated content on the economy and confidence.

While some businesses have started to identify AI-generated material, the senator emphasized that the reliance on voluntary compliance is alarming and points to the need for stronger laws and standards.
In his letter, Bennet asked business leaders to respond by July 31 to issues with the implementation of standards for identifying AI-generated content and the penalties for breaking the regulations.
The need for labeling AI content and for avoiding the dissemination of false information via unlabeled AI-generated content is a global problem, not only in the US. Similar worries have also been voiced by European parliamentarians, notably Vera Jourova of the European Commission.
In order to stop the spread of misinformation and ensure openness, Jourova underlined the necessity for labels on generative AI tools that have the ability to produce it.
Bipartisan measures aimed at openness and innovation in the AI area were submitted by American lawmakers on June 8 despite the fact that there is presently no comprehensive AI legislation in the country. This shows that there is growing interest in the regulation and responsible use of AI technologies.
