Volkswagen’s latest move is exciting! At CES 2024 in Las Vegas, they announced a new addition to their cars. Every Volkswagen model with IDA voice assistant will soon feature an AI-powered chatbot. Imagine having a chatbot in your car that can read out researched content. This innovation is all set to start in Europe in the second quarter.
This AI chatbot isn’t just any chatbot. It’s based on Cerence’s advanced Chat Pro software. Volkswagen’s electric vehicles like the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.3 will get this feature first. And it’s not just limited to EVs – the new Tiguan, Passat, and Golf will have it too.
For those in the U.S. waiting for this feature, there’s a bit of a wait. Volkswagen is still thinking about introducing it there.

Here’s a bit of background: ChatGPT is a creation of OpenAI, a big name in tech startups. Volkswagen is leading the way among major automakers by integrating ChatGPT into their vehicles. Remember, Mercedes-Benz already did this with their MBUX system last June.
Volkswagen’s approach is smart. They’ve woven ChatGPT into the IDA voice assistant. This means, besides the usual controls for music, navigation, and AC, the system will now answer more complex questions. ChatGPT will enable richer conversations and provide vehicle-specific info, all hands-free.
Drivers will use the existing “Hello IDA” command or a steering wheel button to interact with it. If IDA can’t answer a question, it’ll pass it to AI, making the response seamless.
But that’s not all. Volkswagen and Cerence are thinking bigger. They’re planning a next-gen in-car assistant based on a large language model.
It’s important to note that this project is separate from Cariad’s work. Cariad, part of the VW Group, focuses on software solutions and has faced some challenges recently, like delayed launches and management changes.
