Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of breaching its original contractual agreements by prioritizing profits over the nonprofit’s founding mission to develop AI benefiting humanity. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, claimed that the startup shifted its focus from making its technology “freely available” to the public to maximizing profits for Microsoft.
In a comprehensive blog post authored by OpenAI’s leadership team, including Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, Sam Altman, and Wojciech Zaremba, the startup revealed key financial details.
Since its inception in 2015, OpenAI raised less than $45 million from Musk, despite his initial commitment to provide up to $1 billion in funding. The company secured over $90 million from other donors to support its research efforts.
The blog post also highlighted the disagreement between Musk and other co-founders, particularly regarding the transition to a for-profit structure. OpenAI emphasized that the vast computational resources required for artificial general intelligence (AGI) necessitated billions of dollars in annual costs, leading to the shift in structure to secure the required funding and resources.

According to OpenAI, Musk suggested merging with Tesla or obtaining full control, ultimately leaving the organization in February 2018 to pursue a relevant competitor to Google and DeepMind. The legal battle underscores the clash of visions within OpenAI, with Musk envisioning a different path for the organization.
OpenAI maintains that its mission is to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity, emphasizing the development of safe and beneficial AGI while promoting widespread access to its tools. The startup refuted Musk’s accusations of abandoning open-source principles, asserting that Musk was aware of and agreed to the gradual shift away from complete transparency as significant progress was made in AGI development.
