Microsoft Copilot, the recently introduced AI chatbot utilizing OpenAI technologies, doesn’t seem to be diverting users from OpenAI’s ChatGPT, based on a recent app store data analysis.
Copilot, featuring an AI chatbot and Image Creator powered by DALL-E 3, offers free access to OpenAI’s newer GPT-4 technology, a contrast to ChatGPT, which relies on GPT-3.5 and involves charges. Despite being a free alternative, Copilot’s launch hasn’t notably impacted ChatGPT’s installs or revenue yet, possibly due to limited promotion.
Appfigures, an app store intelligence provider, suggests Copilot’s launch went relatively unnoticed, partly attributed to factors like a lack of promotion during its initial Google Play launch on December 20th.
Upon launching on the App Store on December 28th, Copilot didn’t employ Apple’s Search Ads, missing an opportunity to gain attention from iOS users. Appfigures reported Copilot achieved 2.1 million downloads across iOS and Android by January 5, 2024. Daily downloads peaked at 413,000, but numbers have since slowed.
The U.S. constitutes Copilot’s largest market with 24% of downloads, followed by Germany, India, Italy, and the U.K. Interestingly, Copilot’s installs are relatively balanced between iOS and Android, with 59% on Google Play and 41% on the App Store.
In comparison, ChatGPT’s downloads were already slowing in December before Copilot’s release, gaining 4.2 million downloads during Copilot’s 2.1 million installs. There’s no apparent impact on ChatGPT’s installs or revenue, which continues to rise, exceeding $30 million by ChatGPT’s first anniversary in November.
While ChatGPT was a breakout success at launch, Copilot hasn’t garnered similar attention, potentially due to the existing dedicated ChatGPT user base, limited promotion during the holiday launch, or concerns about Bing-heavy integration.
However, Copilot hasn’t displaced ChatGPT as the preferred AI chatbot. Microsoft is exploring other applications for AI tech, such as introducing a Copilot button on PCs.
