Clubhouse, the once-popular live audio app, is adapting to changing user preferences by introducing a new feature that allows users to send text messages in their own custom voice. The move comes as the app faces a decline in user activity.
Previously known for its live audio discussions, Clubhouse had introduced group voice chats as a response to the drop in user numbers. With this latest announcement, the platform acknowledges that users may not always be in a position to send voice messages. Now, users can train their custom voice, send text messages, and have their friends hear the message in the recreated voice, preserving the feeling of a real-time chat.
According to the company, the AI is capable of recreating the user’s voice closely to the original, even with minimal training involving reading just a few phrases. Clubhouse assures that the AI may struggle with recreating laughter accurately.
To enhance the user experience, the app displays an indicator to friends when the AI voice is reading out a message, maintaining a sense of being in a live conversation.

Clubhouse, facing a decrease in usage in recent years and having undergone layoffs, is now experimenting with AI-powered features to retain user interest. The app aims to make conversations between friends more seamless, hoping to retain and engage users.
The custom voice text feature is currently available only in the U.S. The move follows Apple’s introduction of a similar feature called Personal Voice last year, which creates a voice that sounds like the user.
Such innovations are essential for users with conditions like ALS, who may be at risk of losing their vocal speaking ability. Clubhouse’s strategic shift towards AI-powered features reflects a broader trend in the tech industry to adapt to evolving user preferences and enhance user engagement.
