Luke Dashjr, a Bitcoin Core coder and CTO of the OCEAN mining pool, is strongly against Ordinals and the privacy service Samourai. He suggests that Ordinals be marked as spam.
Dashjr has been working hard to block Ordinals transactions from both his own Bitcoin node and the mining pool’s node. He sees them as spam that takes advantage of Bitcoin’s Segwit and Taproot upgrades to store a lot of data on the chain.
Casey Rodarmor made ordinals, which permanently add data to Bitcoin’s blockchain in the form of a Taproot transaction input. They do this by using Bitcoin’s Segwit witness data discount. Users can save money on fees and keep up to 4MB of data per block this way. Dashjr says this method is different from how Segwit and Taproot were originally designed by Satoshi, which was for transactions rather than just storing random data.
Dashjr thinks that Ordinals is taking advantage of a “bug” in spam that needs to be fixed. He thinks it’s an attempt to get around the community-set data limits. He calls it an abuse of a weakness in the Bitcoin Core software.
Dashjr’s partner Bitcoin Mechanic backs the move to filter out Ordinals, stressing how important it is to take away the motivation to use a bug to spam Bitcoin blocks.
Using Dashjr’s Bitcoin Knots node and wallet, the OCEAN mining pool has put in place steps to block Ordinals transactions. It has been known for months that Dashjr doesn’t like Ordinals and doesn’t like Samourai-style Whirlpool deals either. Most Ordinals and Whirlpool deals are not included in the mined blocks of the OCEAN mining pool, which changed its name from Eligius not long ago.
This is very important to know: OCEAN’s choice does not block Ordinals or Whirlpool transactions from the Bitcoin network; it just chooses not to include most of them in the blocks it creates and mines.
Ordinals and Whirlpool users can choose to send their transactions to other mining pools or single miners, which makes sure that their transactions are still handled on the Bitcoin network. Dashjr is working hard to make more changes to Bitcoin Knots that will handle these transfers.
